REICHERT DOUGLAS AUSTIN, SR. D...

REICHERT DOUGLAS AUSTIN, Sr. Died peacefully, after long illness, on February 14, 2016, at his home in Pittsburgh, PA. He was 86. He was born and raised in Erie, PA. Mr. Reichert graduated from The Northfield Mount Hermon School, where he excelled in swimming and lacrosse. He attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, where he met his beloved wife, Martha Dewar. He studied business, was on the swim team and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He graduated in 1951, enlisted in the US Air Force and married Martha Dewar. After their honeymoon they began their married life, stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Doug had a distinguished business career in the insurance industry. He had a broad knowledge of the industry with an expertise in Marine Insurance due to Pittsburgh's position as the the number one inland port in the country. He was president of the Propeller Club. He started his career with The Travelers and Chubb Insurance Companies and spent the majority of his career with Henderson Brothers Insurance. He was a member of the Duquesne Club, The Edgeworth Club and Shannopin Country Club. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Chester and Bernice Austin Reichert; and by his brothers, Chet and Bill. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Dewar Reichert; and his son and daughter- in-law, Douglas Austin Reichert, Jr. and Donna Follini Reichert and his son, James Dewar Reichert. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Lynn Reichert Cannon, Lisa Anne Reichert, Laura Reichert Matthews, Sara Burnett Reichert, Joseph Dewar Reichert and Lucien Searle Reichert; and two great- grandchildren, Grace and Austin Cannon. Doug cherished his family, his grandchildren and friends, vacations, holiday traditions, golfing with his sons. These were his passions. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his gregarious personality and contagious laugh. Doug and Martha have been longtime members of the Ben Avon Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held there on March 12, 2016. The church is located at 7501 Church Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA. The memorial service will start at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Douglas Austin Reichert to Westminster College.
