LANE CLIFFORD McCALMONT, JR. Of the South Hills of Pittsburgh, died of cardiac arrest on Saturday, July 11, 2015, in his home in Friendship Village of South Hills. Cliff was born on July 23, 1927, of the late Dr. Clifford McCalmont Lane, a prominent urologist at Allegheny General Hospital, and Florence Weltner Hibbs Lane. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1947 in Gulfport, MS. A graduate of Washington & Jefferson College in Mathematics, he went on to obtain another B.S. as well as M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Cliff was a registered Professional Engineer and began his engineering career in 1952 with Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company, primarily in power transformer design and testing. Subsequently he joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation directing laboratory, field and analytical projects on extra high-voltage transmission lines as well as development of analytical tools for generator transient stability, authoring several published electrical engineering papers. These efforts contributed significantly to building the electric power grid across the U.S. In 1977, Cliff accepted a position with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., as a power system analyst and staff advisor on interconnected transmission systems in rate cases, providing expert testimony on behalf of the Commission on these matters. Upon retirement from FERC in 1989, Cliff returned to Pittsburgh full-time consulting with HDR, Inc., an engineering firm, on designing highway and airport runway lighting systems, including the new runways at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. He retired fully in 1994 to resume his model railroading hobby and other electrical and mechanical home improvement projects. Cliff applied the same mathematical prowess and electrical capability in designing train layouts and controls as he had in his professional life. He routinely impressed visitors with his extensive collection of 14 pre-war Lionel Standard Gauge trains, some videos of which are still available on YouTube.com. Cliff was an intensely scholarly but private person, and an intensely proud family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Louise Richards Lane; son, Richards Edward and Margaret Lane of Tampa, FL; and daughter, Maryl Ann Lane and John Paul Galles of Charlotte, NC. Memorial services are private. Arrangements by the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, Lawrenceville. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
