DR. GEORGE J. PAVLIC, M.D. Of McCandless Twp., died peacefully on Friday, March 27, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 5, 1930, in Pittsburgh's North Side. Dr. Pavlic is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 59 years, MaryAnn (Knake) R.N. They met while caring for a mutual patient at St. Francis Hospital and he often said MaryAnn was “the best thing that ever happened to me.” Father of a loving and caring family: Maria (Michael) Barrett, Karen Santelli, MaryBeth Pavlic, Lynne (Scott) Marshall, and George (Beth) Pavlic. Grandad of Claire Barrett, Bryan Barrett, Gabrielle Santelli, Alannah Pavlic, Luka Pavlic, and Nikolas Pavlic. Preceded in death by parents George and Mary Pavlic, brother Edward Pavlic, and sister Helen Pavlic. A 1948 Hall of Fame graduate of North Catholic High School, Dr. Pavlic also received degrees from Duquesne University (Summa Cum Laude), University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha honor fraternity), and the Ohio State University Hospital. Dr. Pavlic's medical practice spanned nearly 40 years, primarily in solo practice of Hematology and Oncology, before joining the UPMC Cancer Institute in the last few years of his career. His home phone number was always listed in the directories, providing direct access for his patients, day or night. Dr. Pavlic was proud to say that medicine was never a business for him, but a privilege to serve in God's ministry, helping patients in medical need. Nothing matched improving the quality of life and longevity of patients. He wrote a book Coming to Grips with Cancer and Chemotherapy to guide patients and families along their cancer journey. Dr. Pavlic served terms as President of the medical staff of St. Francis Medical Center, and as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at North Hills Passavant Hospital. Dr. Pavlic was an original member of North Hills Passavant Hospital medical staff when it opened in 1964. He established Passavant's first outpatient chemotherapy department in the late 1960's. He was a member of the Allegheny County and Pennsylvania State medical societies, and the American Medical Association, and served on the boards of the Leukemia Society and Blood Bank. He served as clinical instructor in medicine for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine for many years. Dr. Pavlic proudly served two years as medical officer (Lieutenant Senior Grade) in the US Navy on sea duty and at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. He was an avid member and supporter of Sarah Heinz House Boys' and Girls' Club, and of North Catholic High School. Dr. Pavlic was extremely proud of his Croatian heritage. He was born of immigrant parents belonging to St. Nicholas North Side Catholic Church and School. He was forever grateful to this country that allowed him the opportunity to become a physician, and for the sacrifices of his family that enabled him to reach that goal. His adage was that many students competing for entrance and graduating from medical school may have had more natural intellectual ability, but they would never out study him. Dr. Pavlic served as Medical Director of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America for 25 years and was honored as the National Croatian Man of the Year in 1980. Dr. Pavlic died from the complications of a very rare disease, Multi System Atrophy (MSA), with autonomic system failure. The Pavlic family is grateful for the loving care provided by Family Hospice and many devoted caregivers. A Mass of Christian burial will be held for immediate family at Sacred Heart Church, with interment at Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery. A memorial Mass and celebration of Dr. Pavlic's life will be held later this year for friends and extended family to honor him. She was only 11 years old at the time, but vividly remembered the trepidation of the passengers aboard the ship and the turbulence of the ocean. She also recalled how unusually quiet everyone became as they approached the harbor. Then, they all broke out into cheers of jubilation when they first caught sight of the Statue of Liberty. Once docked, Connie's family entered the country through Ellis Island, and then took a train to Pittsburgh. Her father had already been in America to work and prepare for his family's long-awaited arrival. This would be the first time that Connie would meet and see her father. A 1946 graduate of Donora High School in Donora, PA, Connie thoroughly enjoyed browsing through her yearbook. (In her later years, she found solace in having her yearbook by her side or on her lap.) She then worked in the accounting department at the Donora Division of US Steel until the time of her marriage in 1949. Before moving to Clairton, PA with her husband, she also worked in the business department at Matway Chevrolet in Donora. Connie will always be dearly remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was compassionate, caring, knowledgeable, skillful and well-known and respected for her selflessness, dropping whatever she was doing to help someone else in need. In addition, Connie was very artistic and a wonderful cook whose pleasure it was to share her delicious home-cooked meals with everyone that came into her home. Connie always cherished being the doting mother of her three dear children, Vince, Linda, and John, and that pure joy carried over to her six beloved grandchildren, Domenic, Maria, Anthony, Michael, Gianna, and Jason. Then, when granddaughter Maria and her husband Mark welcomed three precious daughters, Connie was thrilled. She was so happy and proud to be “Great Nana” to Sienna, Vivienne, and Maela. Her eldestgreat granddaughter, Sienna Concetta, is her “Great Nana's” namesake. During the last several years of her life, Connie resided with her only daughter, Linda Delconte Kushner, who lovingly cared for her mother. The daughter of Bartley and Irene Brown Shearn, Sister Elizabeth entered the Congregation from St. Raphael Parish in Pittsburgh. From 1968-1975, she taught in elementary and secondary schools in the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Altoona-Johnstown and Greensburg. Her ministry sites included St. Patrick High School in Gallitzin (1957-1960), St. John High School in Uniontown (1961-1964), Geibel High School in Connellsville (1964-1968), and Fontbonne Academy in Bethel Park, where she served as principal from 1970 to 1976. In 1978, Sister Elizabeth began a 34-year passion at the University of Maryland to convert what she called “math avoiders” into math learners. As Math Learning Specialist, she worked tirelessly to help thousands of students dispel their fear of math. With sensitivity and caring, Sister Elizabeth brought out the best in her students, believing that success in learning carried over into other areas of their lives. In presentations across the country, she encouraged a “math-friendly” culture by enticing college students to become math teachers who can meet the needs of students with lower- and middle-level math abilities. A firm but compassionate teacher, Sister Elizabeth received numerous academic awards, including three President's Distinguished Service Award at the University of Maryland. Creative, kind and generous, Sister Elizabeth exemplified a spirit of hospitality, building community among local Sisters and laypersons over movies, dinners and prayer. When celebrating her 50th Jubilee, Sister Elizabeth singled out her mother as her “top teacher” because she modeled a deep faith through prayers and daily Mass. She credited her father for inspiring her self-sufficiency and her knack for fixing things. Sister Elizabeth most recently enrolled in a “Death and Dying” course, which friends say, brought her much comfort and peace as she prepared for her own resurrection into new life. Sister Elizabeth is survived by nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, Associates, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. Donations in the name of Sister Elizabeth may be sent to the Sisters of St. Joseph Memorial Fund, Development Office, 1020 State St., Baden, PA 15005. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
