GLORIA ROMETO GAYDOS A LONGTI...

GLORIA ROMETO GAYDOS A longtime Sewickley resident, passed away on May 8, at the age of 94 from natural causes, with her family by her side. Gloria was born July 19, 1925, to the late Emil and Mary Sader Rometo of Glassmere. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Gaydos; sons, Robert and Jeffrey Gaydos; and her brother Emil Rometo. Gloria's father was one of 12 children, and she loved growing up in the large, extended Rometo family. She was proud of her Italian heritage. After graduating from East Deer High School, she attended Penn State University, where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She graduated in 1947 with a degree in medical technology. Gloria worked at the HJ Heinz Company performing quality control checks on ketchup, before taking a job as a lab technician at Sewickley Valley Hospital. That's where she met John and they married in July of 1949, beginning a remarkable love-filled journey of 52 years. Gloria had exceptional domestic skills. She was a talented seamstress, who made clothes for herself and her children. She could hang wallpaper, reupholster furniture, had an eye for interior design, and planted beautiful gardens. But it was in the kitchen where she excelled the most. Gloria's chicken and peas casserole, roast beef, homemade pizza, chicken paprikash with dumplings, and zucchini pancakes were unforgettable. She loved desserts and baked everything from scratch. We still struggle to replicate some of her signature recipes, especially her nutroll and flaky piecrust. Her kids often accused her of omitting secret ingredients when she shared her recipes. Gloria had a kind and generous heart. Her door was always open and there was always an extra seat at her table. She loved to have fun, never passed up a reason to celebrate, and boy, did she know how to throw a party! She enjoyed entertaining, whether it was a gathering for a hundred people or one of her big weekly Sunday family dinners, she made everything herself, and always went the extra mile. She would poach whole salmons, shuck oysters, and it wasn't out of the ordinary to see her at the head of the table, igniting a pan of bananas flambé for dessert. Gloria loved lobster dinners, crossword puzzles, shopping trips, snowy days, penguins, romance novels, cruises, Caribbean beaches, and strong Manhattans at happy hour. But she loved her family the most. She was a warm and loving Mom and leaves behind three daughters, Jennifer Chmay and her husband, Peter of Edgeworth, Claudia Scanlon and her husband, Kieran of Sewickley, and Leslie Harper and her husband, Jack of Holliston, MA. The girls were in daily contact with her and were in constant disagreement over which one of them was her favorite. Gloria tried to settle the argument the day she bought each of them the same t-shirt that said “Mom Loves Me Best.” They always told her she was the greatest Mom in the world, but she was arguably an even better Grandma. Gloria doted on her nine grandchildren, Victor Gaydos, John (Jody), Jeffrey and Katherine Chmay, Connor and Kiera Scanlon, and Grant, Blake and Laine Gloria Harper. They have many happy memories of those big family dinners; her amazing cooking, especially her homemade pasta and spaghetti sauce, swimming in her pool, the beautiful brooches she always wore, the money and candy she loved to slip them, and the magical Christmas celebrations at her home. They remember she was not afraid to speak her mind and dole out honest advice when needed, whether they wanted to hear it or not. Grandma could always be counted on to cry at all of their accomplishments, be it a First Communion, good report card, sports victory, graduation, engagement, wedding or just about anything else. She loved them to pieces. Gloria also leaves five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Alivia, Dante and Noelle Gaydos, and Sophie Chmay. Gloria was an eternal optimist. We can't remember her ever complaining, no matter what life threw at her. Her glass was always half full. We hope you'll fill your glass the rest of the way, find something to celebrate, and make a toast in her honor. She would love that. We extend a huge thank you to the loving staff at Masonic Village who took extraordinary care of her in her final years. We will have a celebration of Gloria's life at a later date. Donations in her memory can be made to Masonic Village, 1000 Masonic Drive, Sewickley, PA 15143 or Friends of Quaker Valley, PO Box 29, Sewickley, PA 15143. KATHLEEN MARY (PLATEK) STEVENSON Deceased Thursday, May 7, 2020. Kathie was born into the family of Ann and Michael Platek on March 3, 1951 as they lived on Lincoln Avenue, Heidelberg PA. Her warmest thoughts were of those who lived on her street. Kathie was very engaging with all who were lucky to know her. As her world expanded, so many would become life-long friends. This is her legacy; those with whom she would travel and dine. Kathie's life has been a brilliant tapestry of devotion to faith, family and friends, a disciplined work ethic, and a brilliant joy for living. Kathie would always be fair and honest with all whom she would meet. I don't believe anyone would deny that she embodied the term "grace". Her Catholic faith created a foundation for her strength and love. Her early teachings concluded in 1969 when she was graduated from Canevin High school. There was not one Holy season that she favored, yet when Christmas Eve came around, all were invited to her home for "Wigilia"; that was a gastronomical fiesta. Birthday parties were celebrated with her famous chicken puffs and flank steak. Kathie continually celebrated life with her friends and family. Her career path was not exactly linear. As a young teen, Kathie started waitressing at the K&K Restaurant in Carnegie. It was a rocky start, but she persisted. After high school, she continued her education in accounting but soon her interest turned to retail sales at Joseph Hornes, then Blocks. It was when Jean Fulton, Legal Administrator for the law firm of Thorp, Reed and Armstrong, discovered Kathie that a very rewarding and accomplished career began. Soon she was working within the Human Resources Department of Thorp Reed and loving the opportunity. She had two careers at the firm. In 1986, when asked to set up a unique staffing firm for the local legal community, she separated from Thorp Reed to establish Legal Management Services. Kathie was truly in her element and successfully operated this firm until its closing in 2014. There was flexibility associated with her position within the firm and certain well-deserved advantages were taken. Kathie and daughter Ann would scout for seasonal travel spots; many of the travels were definitely mother/daughter: Maui, San Francisco, San Diego, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale; then as the snow fell, ski trips. I believe that Kathie's most special place was the family cottage at Van Buren Bay on Lake Erie. This is where you could turn back the calendar to the 1950's; she would walk the beach with a cup of coffee in the morning, read a book in a beach chair during the afternoon, and stroll along the shoreline as the sun set. Kathie's family and devoted friends will miss her: her husband, Dick, daughter, Ann (Kurt) Humbertson, her three loving grandchildren, Emma, Ella and Ethan, her sister, Carol (Ron) Goldberg, niece, Lorraine (Wes) Adams, nephew, Ross (Lisa) Mascellino, many cousins and her "forever friends", Cathy and Patti. Due to COVID-19 a celebration of Kathie's life will be held later in the year. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

RAYMOND HENNING On Saturday, May 9, 2020, the world lost another WWII veteran. Raymond Henning, who died at the age of 94, served his country proudly and never failed to regale his friends and family with insightful tales of his exploits. He was known to everyone as Slicker, a fitting moniker as he truly was slicker than most. He had a keen perception of life. His sense of humor was unmatched and his quick wit left most people speechless. He was brilliant when it came to assessing a situation with very astute one liners. Slicker loved to hunt. He went on numerous hunting expeditions with his grandsons. On every trip he would immerse himself in the beauty of nature. He'd then return home and describe in detail how exciting each hunt was for him. He was also a talented craftsman. He made clocks, curio cabinets, jewelry boxes and toys and puzzles for the grandchildren. A truly gifted man. He will leave a hole in the lives of his children, Ray Henning and Marlane Korneff as well as his daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Richard. His grandchildren will forever remember their candy loving grandfather as a man who made sure they knew where he kept his stash. While they mourn his loss, they take comfort in knowing he has been forever reunited with Virginia, his wife of 58 years. What a glorious reunion it must be for them! Virginia is definitely showing him where the buffet is located. Slicker is also survived by a sister, Faye (Don) Winklevoss and a brother, Vern (Mary) Henning; as well as eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his mother and father Blanche and Henry Henning, his sister Elizabeth, his brothers Ralph and Melvin and his infant son, Blair.
