JULIA C. (SAMEK) SINICKI Age 88, of Polish Hill, passed away suddenly but peacefully with her loving family around her, went to Heaven on Christmas Eve, on Tuesday, December 24, 2019. Born on March 1, 1931 in Grindstone, PA and resided in Star Junction, PA, where she graduated with high honors from Perry High School. After high school, Julia moved to the big city with her sister, Dorothy Same to spread their wings. While living in East Liberty in Pittsburgh, PA, she worked as a barmaid at her brother, Joe's, bar on the Northside, where she met her future husband, Walt. They married on June 16, 1956 and they have shared a wonderful and blessed 63 years together. Julia spent five years working at the Melwood Drug Stores Substation Post Office in Oakland until her daughter arrived. She then became a dedicated and wonderful mother for several years. She started to work at Bell Telephone on Stanwix Street, cleaning offices at night. Julia then moved to a daylight job, working for the Pittsburgh Public School District at Arsenal Middle School in the cafeteria where she retired at the age of 65. She had 23 wonderful retirement years that she used to continue to make the world a better place. She was a very religious person who was dedicated to her church, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Polish Hill and was proud to see it become part of the new Shrine Churches of Pittsburgh grouping. Her love and devotion to St. Theresa and the Divine Mercy of God was profound. Her love of family, kindness to all, prayerfulness to others and baking skills were hard to top. Her daughter believes she was called by God because her family misses her nut rolls, bread and paczki. She leaves behind her loving husband, Walter J. "Red" "Jr." Sinicki; cherished daughter Julia "Julie" Sinicki of Hampton Township; her sister, Theresa (Bob) Hajduk; five godchildren; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, who were loved and cherished as her own children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Caroline (Yokobosky) Samek; her siblings, Joe (Stella) Samek, Daniel (Joan) Samek, Mary (Ed) Syslo, John (Marge) Samek, Dorothy Samek and Steve (surviving wife Marge) Samek. ROBERT "BOB" RATAY Age 89, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 25, 2019, surrounded by family. He was the loving husband of Evelyn Ratay. Born on the South Side, Bob was the son of the late Marie and Andrew Ratay. He graduated from South High School in 1949 where he played both baseball and basketball. Bob served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 and then worked for Matthews International for 37 years, retiring in 1996 to enjoy traveling and spending time with his family. Bob and his wife Evelyn, the love of his life and best friend, spent 61 beautiful years together; she was his life. Bob loved family, particularly his granddaughters to whom he was known as Pap Pap; music, especially Frank Sinatra; reading the newspaper; Pittsburgh sports teams; and Penn State ice cream. He was passionate about traveling, the beach, the theater, talking with his financial planner (aka his barber), cooking, and his vegetable garden. Bob was loved by all who knew him. He was hard-working, warm, kind, generous, and witty, and he loved making his friends and family laugh. (BORN) McGINLEY It is with sadness our family announces the passing of our precious Mother, Audreaun Audrey Marie (Born) McGinley, formerly of Sheraden on Saturday, December 21, 2019. Audrey was in declining health and passed peacefully surrounded by her family. Born August 23, 1925 in Hastings, PA she is the second oldest daughter of seven children to the late Henry and Martha (Kane) Born and the last of their children to pass. Audrey also is step-daughter to the late Marie (Muri) Born and step-sister to three sisters and two brothers. Audrey moved to Pittsburgh at 19 to live with her Aunt, (the late Hilda Kane) and worked as a sales associate at Gimbels Department Store. She naturally gravitated to Church and joined Holy Innocents Sodality where she would rise to the office of President. She met the love of her life, Thomas V. McGinley and they married on October 6, 1951. With five children all-in-school, Audrey returned to work as a sales associate with Joseph Horne's Department Store for a span of 22+ years. Audrey was a faithful member of Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Sheraden for over 70 years. Her life was made complete with her immediate family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings and in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and the many friends she made along life's journey. Through the years, Audrey enjoyed attending musical productions at Heinz Hall and the Benedum. She traveled often to several parts of the United States and internationally to Rome and the Greek Isles along with her sister Dolores. RICHARD C. PAGNOTTA Age 92, of Murrysville, formerly of East Liberty and Penn Hills, passed away on December 26, 2019. Beloved husband of Theresa (Giorgione) Pagnotta. Loving father of Rich (the late Ellen) Pagnotta and Donna Lee (John) Satira. Proud grandfather of Matthew (Marie), Brian (Catalina), Maria (Andrew), John, Michael, and Richard. Richard honorably served in the Navy during WWII and later served eight years in the Navy Reserves. Following his military service, he owned Rich and Bill's Service Station in Homewood. Rich then began his career in the insurance industry, working for American General, formerly National Life, where he retired after nearly 35 years. After retirement, he worked for Sheetz in Plum Boro, which he greatly enjoyed. In his free time, he loved singing in the St. Bartholomew choir, tending to his vegetable garden, bowling, and hunting. SR. MAURA ANNE DUNN, CDP Sister Maura Anne (Shirley) Dunn completed the purpose of her life on Thursday, December 26, 2019, at age 90, a Sister of Divine Providence for 52 years, and the oldest living graduate of La Roche University. She is survived by her brother, Edward J. Dunn, and was preceded in death by her parents, Edward J. and Bertha C. (Dunegan) Dunn. Sister Maura Anne lived a life of service, and it was a very colorful and varied life. Before joining the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence, she attended the University of Pittsburgh and trained to be a stenographer and paralegal. She worked at the Carnegie Library, and at the Pentagon. After entering the Congregation, she completed a degree in sociology at La Roche, and then began her ministry in social service at Divine Providence Hospital. She served in this capacity for 19 years, until she was needed to care for her ailing mother. After her mother passed away, she became a receptionist at her alma mater, La Roche, where, in her words, she greeted the world coming through the door, the students from 30 or 40 different countries. She also served in the admissions office. In 2017, La Roche named her Woman of Providence, a recognition which she greatly treasured. She never saw her ministry as a job, but a joy. Cathryn was the daughter of the late Carmelo and Domenica Violi and the sister of the late Peter Violi, Josephine Carmen, Jenny Panza, and Antoinette Bishop and the sister of Charles Violi. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Cathryn devoted her life to lovingly care for her family. She adored all of her grandchildren who could always make her smile. Upon leaving her, Cathryn always left you with a sweet, "be careful". Cathryn was a retired LPN at St. Margaret Memorial Hospital (Lawrenceville and Aspinwall). MARILYN J. FINLAY Age 83, of Washington formerly of Crafton, PA passed away with her family by her side on December 26, 2019. Daughter of the late Jean and William P. Jessop. Loving mother of Cheryl (Jim) Muraco, Bill (Janet) Finlay and Cindy Ousley; cherished grandmother Jim (Shannon), Ryan, Christie, Tara (Cory), Blair, Carey and the late Adam, and six great-grandchildren; Dear sister of William (the late Patricia) Jessop and Charles (Virginia) Jessop; also survived by nieces and nephews. Marilyn loved doing word searches and was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. She enjoyed playing bingo. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. ANITA M. MERLINO Age 61, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away on December 26, 2019, after a hard fought battle with cancer. Anita was born in Pittsburgh on March 24, 1958. She grew up in the city with her mother Mary and Sister Cathy. She graduated from Ursuline Academy and attended Wilma Boyd Career School. Later in life she received an Associate's Degree from CCAC for Paralegal Studies. In Anita's early adulthood she got a job and became the first women in Pittsburgh to work as a fish cutter at Benkovitz Seafoods. This is where she met many lifelong friends and the love of her life the late Joseph W. Merlino. Anita and Joe were soulmates and married on February 5, 1983. They had great adventures together, everything from buying their first home to memorable vacations to starting their own business and creating their own beautiful family. Anita enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She always hosted the best holiday parties, birthday parties and family Sunday dinners. No one was ever unwelcome or left hungry at Anita's house. All of her recipes were measured with love and will forever be the center of all family events. She was a phenomenal mother. She loved watching her children grow into the successful hardworking adults that they are. Anita taught them to be strong, independent, hardworking and compassionate, everything that she was. She raised her kids with solid family values and her memory will always be honored in their lives as they begin to have families of their own. Anita is survived by her loving mother, Mary Benvenuti; and her three darling children, Joseph W. Merlino, Jr. (Alicia Merlino), Lena Boyza (Michael W. Boyza) and Nicholas Merlino; and by her exceptional caring sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Rosco McCracken plus nephew, Jimmy Langdon (Heather LaGamba); survived also by her lifelong best friend, Renee Peluso and family, Big Jim and Char and the Hollerich family; good friends, Linda Meyers, Kathy Baron and Sharon Gallagher; Anita is also survived by her in-laws, Joette Colletts (David Colletts), Donna Rau (William Rau), Deana Colona (Christopher Colona) and David Merlino; and her nieces and nephews; and lastly, her close cousins and family members. Anita was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Merlino. Anita did not lose her battle with cancer. She finished it. Now she is in the loving arms of God and has been reunited with the love of her life in heaven.
